Friends of the Arboretum


Nominating an Individual or Group

From November through March of each year, we accept nominations of candidates who have done exemplary restoration projects in Wisconsin. Nominations must be submitted no later than April 4, 2008. Winners must be present at the awards ceremony.

We are accepting nominations for the following four awards for exemplary restoration projects in Wisconsin:

• John T. Curtis "Career Excellence" Award - Individuals who have demonstrated career excellence in ecological restoration will be eligible for this $2,000 award plus an engraved plaque.

• Virginia M. Kline "Community-based Ecological Restoration" Award - With a $2,000 award plus an engraved plaque, we will recognize a group or organization for excellence in community-based ecological restoration.

• Henry C. Greene "Innovative Approaches" Award - This $2,000 award plus an engraved plaque will be given to an individual for creative or innovative approaches to ecological restoration.

• John Nolen "Application of Sound Practices" Award - This award of an engraved plaque (and up to $2,000 at the discretion of the judges) will be given to an individual, organization, group or business demonstrating the sound practice of ecological principles in specific projects and applications.

 

Nomination procedure for the John T. Curtis Award for Career Excellence in Ecological Restoration

Nominators must submit the required candidate information. This documentation must be submitted to the submission address below and must be postmarked or delivered by 4 p.m., April 4, 2008. Nominators have the option of submitting all-electronic materials or an all-paper nomination packet. If choosing to submit a paper nomination, you must send six (6) complete copies. Nominations are confidential and self-nominations are welcome.

Selection Procedure

The award will be determined by a panel of five judges. These judges have ecological restoration expertise, are from the private and public sectors and represent Wisconsin's geographic diversity. The panel includes one member of the Friends of the Arboretum Board of Directors and a representative of the Aldo Leopold Foundation. Judges may solicit additional input from other experts.

• Community involvement-Describe the partnerships and/or volunteers involved in the project. Describe the effect of community involvement on the people and organizations involved.
• Lessons learned-What is unique about the restoration approach that would be of value to others doing restoration work?
• Documentation - Provide documentation of the project outcomes. Examples: statistics of volunteer contributions, numbers of acres restored, etc.
• Outreach - Describe any others who have learned from these activities.
• Budget - What was the cost of and source of funds for the project? Describe how the budget reflects the cooperative nature of the project.
• Duration - Please describe how long the project has been functioning. Provide a project timeline.

This information should be no more than ten pages, excluding visual materials.
